The Moon is seen to increase its phase from the New Moon (Amavasya) day; this period of 14 days is known as the Shukla Paksha or waxing fortnight.

Similarly, during the period from the Full Moon (Pournima) day the Moon is seen to reduce its phase; this is known as the Krishna Paksha or waning fortnight.
