Dasa

Human life according to Vedic Astrology was considered to last for 120 years. This period was divided into 9 parts, of different durations each, and each such period was considered to be ruled by one of the 9 planets for that period as detailed below. The 27 stars are divided into 9 groups of 3 each and according to the birth star of an individual that particular planet’s Dasa begins at birth.

Planet Duration (yrs) Stars
Ketu 7 Aswini, Magham, Moolam
Venus 20  Bharani, Pooram, Pooradam
Sun  6  Krittika, Uttiram, Uttiradam
Moon 10 Rohini, Hastam, Sravanam
Mars  7  Mrigasirsham, Chittirai, Sravishta
Rahu 18 Arudra, Swati, Sadayam,
Jupiter 16 Punarpoosam, Vishakam, Poorvashada
Saturn 19 Pushya, Anusha, Uttirattadi
Mercury 17 Ayilya, Jyeshta, Revati

The dasa at birth of a person depends upon the position of the Moon at the time of his birth.

When a person is passing through the dasa of a particular planet he will face the maximum or minimum effects of that planet's influence depending whether the planet is exalted or low, benefic or malefic, and aspected by other friendly or enemical planets.

Each dasa is further divided into 9 parts, each of which is known as a bukti.   Each bukti, in each dasa, has again different durations.

In the sub menu for Dasabukti, under Horoscope menu, the beginning and finishing dates of each dasa and bukti are computed for a person and displayed.
